“Sometimes I want to be girly and sometimes I want to be a tomboy.”

“My mom was really into making me try new things. So I think my first beauty experience was actually with a face compact and she took me to a makeup store and she bought me a Hello Kitty compact. It was a foundation compact but it was meant for kids – I was literally in 1st or 2nd grade, but she wanted me to see how to use it. I didn’t use anything else but that, and it was so white – it didn’t even match my skin tone, but I loved the idea of putting something on my face.

I don’t really wear a lot of makeup to work. I used to work in more of a minimalistic,  almost grunge-y place and I never wore a lot of makeup. And now I work at Michael Kors so I try to put a little more makeup on and dress differently. And then if I’m going on a date or out with girlfriends, my look will be different for that occasion. I even used to wear makeup just to go to the grocery store like in case I bumped into someone. I will leave the house without it sometimes, but it definitely makes me feel better if I have it on.

I’m from Korea, and I think before I moved here I used to be so into light skin or pale skin. My dad used to tell me if a girl has light skin and dark hair, it’s beautiful. But after I moved here – I used to live in Texas and everyone was tan, with light hair, that’s when I started wearing a lot of makeup. That’s when I was introduced to the smokey eye, and I was like ‘oh that actually pops my eyes even more and I look even more exotic.’

I think the environments I’ve been in have definitely influenced me.

I don’t think I see beauty as a tool to communicate with other people, it’s more of a form of expression for me. I use it to change my look – sometimes I want to be girly and sometimes I want to be a tomboy.

Today I started with Shiseido Synchro Skin Foundation, and then I used NARS Jolie Poupee shadow on my eyes. It’s really old but I’ve been obsessed since I was a kid. The purple Jolie. I actually put the lighter shadow on first, then the darker one, then the liner. Then I use Anastasia Brow Wiz and finish with Too Cool For School Mascara. I use MAC’s Highlighter all over my face, and put white in the inner corner – I use this little white duo palette, I think it’s Japanese, it’s a Sonia Rykiel collaboration. I got it from a friend, but I love doing the white on the bottom because I feel like it pops my eye. For my liner, I use a bunch of different ones, I usually use Stila, but I recently got Kat Von D’s tattoo liner and I kind of like that one too.”
